Family legend
According to family legend, and recorded in Monty Dobkin's book 'More Tales of the Manchester Jewry', Joseph was transferred from a military hospital being treated following an accident, to a hush-hush job in the Intelligence Corps.

Until he was demobbed in 1919, his family could only contact him via the War Office.

According to Joseph, because he spoke Yiddish and a little German, the authorities thought he would be able to understand German-speakers in Holland. He apparently spent several months there, but official secrecy didn't allow any other explanations.

His grandson has a letter from a colonel in Whitehall, telling his family that Joseph is alive and well.
