Family story as told to Rabbi Meir Salasnik

Conscripted aged 17 He spent only one night in the trenches and was then captured. His family was advised that he was missing in action, but his elder sister Alice dreamt that he was alive. The next day, the family was advised that he had been exchanged for a German prisoner and was returning to England. He survived his time in the camp by becoming camp translator as he was fluent in Yiddish and could understand German. For this reason, he received better rations.
