Translator
Joe was captured early on in the war and became a translator for the Germans as a POW with Jewish prisoners as he could speak Yiddish to them. He was relatively well-treated by the Germans and survived the war.
Early death
Joe died quite young from lung cancer as a result of smoking the cigarettes that were given out during the war.
Patriotism
Joe and his brother joined up because, like their family, they were very proud of being English and how they had integrated into society. They joined up to show patriotism.
