Outbreak of the First World War

Josef's family joined their son in Kazan soon after the outbreak of the First World War. The rapid advance by the German forces on Riga in 1914/1915 forced their evacuación, first to Nevel, then St. Petersburg, and finally to Kazan in 1915. They did not return to Riga until 1922, by which time Latvia had gained its independence.

Josef came to London in 1933 not Knowing a word of English but, with the help of a friend, set himself up in a office at 33/34 Bow Street, moving to Long Acre when the former building was destroyed in the Blitz. The year after his arrival in England, he managed also to bring his wife and son over to London , where they set up home in Hendon.
