Joe enlisted with the West Yorkshires in 1907, promoted to Lance Corporal in October 1910 and then Corporal in October 1912, having served in Malta from January 1912.

Joe's regiment was mobilised as soon as war was declared, and made their way to France. He was reported as missing on 6th October 1914, then as a Prisoner of War 15th April 1915.

Joe was actually captured on 20th September 1914 in Vaille-sur-Aisne, near Reims, France. He had sustained a gun shot wound to the chest. He then spent the next two years in the Niederzwehren POW camp in Germany, where he contracted typhus fever.

Joe was released and arrived in Switzerland 11th August 1916, before finally arriving back in the UK in March 1918
