P.2. The minutes from the last Visitation Committee meeting

Draft regarding a letter he has read to the Visitation Committee. He writes that they were glad to learn of his progress in his work and hopes his mission will bring about the good results it deserves.

A draft typed letter to Rev. Michael Adler in Rouen, France, 10th February 1915 from P. Ornstein, Secretary of the United Synagogue suggesting Adler keep a diary of his doings and incidents, that a Jewish Chaplain's book on the 'greatest European War' would be unique. He is glad that Adler has been inoculated. Ornstein writes about his concern that the Rev. S. Levy may be appointed.

16th February 1915. Marked 'Unofficial', Ornstein writes about the proposed appointment of a 'Temporary" Minister, Rev. S. Levy.

The letter explains the shortage of Jewish Chaplains in Britain and asks for the appointment of additional Chaplains , one for the Southern, Eastern and Midland Districts and one for the Northern Districts. The letter explains the difficultly of providing adequate relgious ministration to Jewish soldiers. It states that it is impossible to give figures of the number of Jewish soldiers as it is difficult for the Jewish Chaplain to the forces in England, Mr. Lipson, to get in touch with them all. Since the commencement of the War, 13,000 Prayer Books have been sent out for distribution and it is believed there are at least 10,000 Jews in the Army. The letter lists the camps that Mr. Lipson has visited and highlights the areas which urgently need attention. Then letter begs to apply for the appointment of Rev. A.A. Green, Minister of the Hampstead Synagogue as Chaplain to the Forces. It suggests the name of the Rev. S. Friedeberg of the Old Hebrew Congregation, Liverpool, for the position of Chaplain for the Northern Hemisphere.

Ornstein writes to enclose a copy of the official notification of Mr. Simmons' appointment as Chaplain.

Ornstein writes that he thinks Rev. Lipson's idea of a dinner to honour Issy Smith 'is ridiculous' and that if he is in town he would be welcomed at the reception to be given to Jewish Soldiers by the Great Synagogue.

Ornstein writes that the United Synaogue should honour V.C.'s as if he did so in the case of Smith he would have to do so on every occasion of a like or even less honour. Ornstein suggests that if Issy Smith is in town on New Year he would be welcomed at the Great Synagogue and at the reception to be given to Jewish Soldiers by the Board of that Synagogue on the first day of New Year.

Letter regarding the appointment of a second Jewish Chaplain for duty in England. He notes that while the Army Council do not feel justified in appointing the Rev. A.A. Green as Chaplain to the Forces, they appreciate the importance of making further provision for religious ministrations to the Jewish Soldiers at the various Military Centres, and are prepared to appoint Jewish Ministers to act as Officiating Clergymen. He begs to apply that the Rev. A.A.Green be appointed an Officiating Clergyman for service with the Jewish Troops in the Eastern Command. He suggests that as the camps are distributed in widely separated parts of the country, that the Officiating Clergymen form a rota to visit the camps on a Sunday.

A draft typed letter to Corporal Felix A. Davis from the Assistant Secretary of the United Synagogue re Chaplain for the Dardanelles, on 7th October 1915. They write that Mr. Archer told him this morning that Mr. leopold has recieved a letter from Mr. Anthony to the effect that it would not be practical to appoint a Jewish Chaplain for the Dardanelles, as the Jews are so scattered in various regiments, over a large area and that the Chief Rabbi of Alexandria was doing very good work. There is a note handwritten in ink that 'I have just heard from Re. M. adler that he is coming home on short leave next week, & will probably call here on Thursday next to discuss among other matters the question of ... [chaplains for the East?]

Many Jewish soldiers have died and not recieved burial according to the custom of their faith. It cites an example of a Jewish Officer being buried in a small cemetery by an Army Chaplain and his grave marked with a cross. It would be a great consolation to the relatives and friends of the dead if the burial service could be conducted by a Jewish Chaplain and graves marked with a Jewish symbol as is now the practice in France and Flanders. They write to ask the authority of the War Office for the appointment of a Jewish Chaplain for H.M. Forces in the East of Europe.

Ornstein asks for other Jewish "Officiating Clergymen" be appointed to work with the Jewish soldiers.

He writes that the Visitation Committee had decided to approach the War Office to appoint another Jewish Chaplain to serve in France. The Rev. Adler was present and explained the position. He has drafted a letter to the War Office regarding this matter.

Letter referring to Mr. Jessel's suggested that Mr. Leopold has signed the letter to the War Office. He has also written to Lord Kitchener.

He writes to enclose a copy of a letter he had recieved from the Admiralty and has also recieved a letter from Rev. M Adler stating that he has recieved official sanction fo the A.G France to his proosal about the passover. Mr. Adler tells him that he was obliged on Staurday last to travel 60 miles to conduct the funeral of a Jewish Officer.

Ornstein writes to make an application to appoint more 'Officiating Clergymen' .

Ornstein writes to confirm that 'The Jewish War Services Committee' has been approved and the following gentlemen were appointed by the Visitation Committee to serve on the Committee; Albert H. Jessel, Felixx A Davies, S.H Emanuel, Samuel Moses, Nathan Moss, P. Ornstein.

Ornstein agrees that 'A great deal of our trouble is due to Mr. Adler thrrough acting without consultation in the first instance'. He writes that the appointment of the Jewish War Services Committee will have the duty of dealing with all military matters relating to Jews.

Ornstein , Secretary of the United Synagogue, on 19th June 1916 writes to inform Adler about the creation of the 'Jewish War Services Committee' and asks for a report of his activities in France to the end of June.

They write that if they furnish the particulars necessary to identify the graves of the British soldiers in question buried in the Cemetary of the United Synagogue at West Ham, the graves will be tended and kept in good order by the Society without charge and limitation of time.

They write to inform them that the consecration ofthe four headstones erected by the Imperial War Graves Commission to the memory of the Australian Jewish Soldiers buriend in Willesden Jews' Cemetery will take place on Sunday 12th November 1922. The ceremony will be performed by the Rev. M. Adler.
