This collection contains several hundred images from the five battalions of Jewish volunteers, the 38th to 42nd Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers, raised in the British Army to fight against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. The 40th Battalion was made up of mainly Palestinians’ who saw their loyalty and support of the British war effort as a way of persuading the British to support a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Amongst the men who served in this regiment were David Ben Gurion and Isaac Ben Zevie, founders of the State of Israel.
