On the 1911 Census Jack is listed as a Public House Bar assistant. By the end of the First World War in 1919 he took over the Carlton Pub at 132 Ackerman Road, Brixton and was still there in 1939 when on the Household survey he is listed as a Licenced Victualler and an ARP Warden

Jack served on HMS President II from 24th Jan 1915 until 15tyh Jan 1919. Then on the President V, both at Stratford. These were training ships of the local Royal Naval Reserves.
