During the war, when the King became a Windsor, Henry's father Charles changed the family name from Taub to Dove, which is the German equivalent.
Antisemitism affecting job prospects
Because of antisemitism during the 1920s, he wasn't able to become a working surgeon so ended up as a GP and remained as one for his whole career which was a waste of extreme medical talent.
Meeting Rosie
He studied Medicine at Edinburgh and met a man called Woolf Sandelson who invited him to Newcastle for the holidays. It was here that he met Woolf's sister Rosie and promptly married her. Woolf gave them a home in Newcastle, Gateshead as a wedding present.
Ending up in India
When he entered the war, he was asked where he wanted to be and he said France but was sent to India instead. He spoke Hindu so could communicate with the local people.
What a gentleman!
Later in life, he moved to Brighton to be nearer to his family, which is where he met his second wife Stella. He used to go collect the paper from the same store and when he died, Hazel went to the newsagents he frequented to let them know. The owner, who he used to chat with in Hindi, described him as a "perfect gentleman."
