"The General"
A few years older than my father, "The General" had joined St John's Ambulance Brigade in 1917, in time to go to France and be in attendance at the Battle of Mons. On leave in Dublin, he was walking with my father and other friends by St Stephen's Green with the ribbon of the Mons Medal on his uniform. Two boy scouts, walking by, straightened up and saluted him. "Ah, the General," my father ad his friends immediately quipped. He was never again called anything else. Even his own children called him "The Gen." There were times in his speech when my father never made it to the punch-line, his infectious laughter having intervened. Afterwards, the entire Irish-Jewish medical mafia pummeled my arm and declared, "Ah, wasn't your old man grand"
Jewish Lads' Brigade
Jack was the medical doctor at JLB camps up until the Second World War. His son Geoffrey used to go with him and sleep in his tent.
