He was reported dead in the Jewish Chronicle on the 30th of October 1914 but actually he'd be taken prisoner by the Germans during the charge at Audregnies. He remained a prisoner of war until he was repatriated on the 26 December 1918 and a few of his letters as a prisoner were published in the Jewish Chronicle, talking about his Jewish experience there. They are included in the 'homefront' section of this personal record.
