Israel was raised by his Aunt and Uncle, Elizabeth and Hyman Goodman, after the untimely deaths of his parents.

His willingness to serve was despite having maternal grandparents, Herman and Fanny Gutman, who were from Germany, and a German father, Marks Reiss, whose family had come to live in England from Leipzig in the 1860s.

Posting:

Israel joined the army in February 1905, and was called up from the reserve in August 1914 and sent to France.

Injured on the Somme, Israel was invalided out of the war and spent the remainder recuperating in hospital before being discharged in 1919.
