Isak was conscripted into the army at the beginning of the war in 1914. Once the war was over and he returned to Poland, he decided he did not like it there anymore, and moved himself and his father to Vienna, but his three sisters did not want to join them.

It was in Vienna that he met his wife Pepi, as they got talking fetching water in the building which they both lived. When they got married nobody was to know that she was three years his senior, as this was not seen as the thing to do in those days.

In 1938, Isak and Pepi sent their daughter Ruth to England, and unfortunately Ruth was never to see them again.
