The Journey to Britain

Isaac Glass told his grandson how he remembers he was 13 when arriving in Britain for the first time.

He remembers he sailed from Russia, fleeing his home of Bishen Kovici, which is now in modern day Belarus. Whilst living there he had enjoyed swimming in the local river. On the boat on his journey to the UK his parents paid the fee for children under twelve and he spent the whole journey terrified that someone would find out he was thirteen. He was certain of his age as he had previously celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in Russia.

Bertha Glass

Family legend
Sarah 'Bertha' Glass gained her nickname in World War Two. Whilst working for the army, she was in a group with another Sarah. She was therefore dubbed Bertha so as to distinguish her from the other Sarah.
