Hyman arrived in London in 1907 aged 18 from a town near Kyiv, Ukraine, escaping Russian persecution. He started a successful business renting out barrows, and by 1909 could afford to bring his parents and four siblings to join him in Whitechapel.
Because he was a Russian citizen, Hyman was limited when it came to which regiment in the British army he was allowed to join. On enlistment he requested to join the 38th battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, one of the newly created Jewish regiments put together to serve in Palestine, but he was instead put in one of the Russian Labour Companies and served on the Western Front in France and Flanders.
After the war, Hyman became a naturalised British citizen, and in 1934 changed his name to Pope.
During the Second World War, Hyman went door-to-door to find homes for children rescued by the Kindertransport.
