Hyman Kaufman is the first member of the Association of Old Boys of the Liverpool Hebrew Schools to fall in action. He was killed by a bursting shell while his company were holding a first line trench, immediately after having come through a bayonet charge. His death came as a great blow to all who knew him, for it is given to few young men to endear themselves to their friends as he had endeared himself.
Hyman Kaufman was not a communal worker; he was never prominent in communal affairs, yet he had won the high esteem of everybody because of a high-souled, generous and chivalrous disposition of which is it impossible to write in adequate terms. He was also possessed of an infectious gaiety that spread light all round.
Another Old Boy, now in hospital at Birmingham, writing which in the trenches said that he had just met Pte. Kaufman in the same trench and that "he cheered them all up that cold and rainy night."
Youthful - he was but twenty-two years of age - and broad built, it is impossible to think of him as dead. But now, alas, there is only his memory to cherish and to his near friends that will for ever be a scared though and inspiration. For his brokenhearted parents - both highly-respected in the community - as well as for his brothers and sisters every sympathy is felt. May the Almighty God care for his soul and grant it eternal peace!
