Hyman Cohen who was born on 23 March 1891 studied at London University before the war, achieving an MA in Mathematics and a BSc. Hons, in Physics. At the start of the war he was teaching mathematics in London. He joined the Royal Flying Corps as an Airman 3rd Class and was posted to France in December 1915 as a wireless operator with No 4 squadron and after spending 12 months on the frontlines he was treated for deafness. Hyman was promoted in September 1917 to 2nd Lieutenant and joined 75 (Home Defence) Squadron based at Elmswell aerodrome in Essex as the Technical Officer in charge of Wireless Operations.
