BENJAMIN – A service in memory of the late Capt. Herbert S. Benjamin was held on Sunday at the Notting Hill Jewish Lads’ Club, of which institution the deceased was a manager. Amongst those present were: Mr and Mrs. Henry S. Benjamin, Mrs. Abraham Lazarus, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Lazarus, Mrs. Dennis E. Samuel and Miss Samuel, the Revs. E. Levine and A. Slavinsky, Messrs. D.M.Davis, Leopold Frank, H.J. Phillips, Percy H. Schwarzschild, P. Rosenfeld, M. Wesansky and L. Whitehill. Addresses were delivered by the Rev. E. Levine, who officiated, and by Mr. Percy Schwarzschild. The latter read a letter from the Rev. L. Morris, C.F., a former manager of the Club, who wrote in part: I, would indeed have liked to join you all in paying a tribute to the memory of one whose death we all mourn, but I am now on my way back to Belgium. It was at the Club where first I met him. Of his work there you are best able to speak. His kind disposition, his quiet, open manner, his eagerness to help the weak and to cheer and encourage the weary, those beautiful characteristics that drew us all to Herbert Benjamin in the old club days, did not leave him in this land of fury. He was always just Herbert Benjamin, friend and lover of his fellows. I knew him as we all knew him – Herbert Benjamin the gentleman; but in that land of suffering I think I saw deeper and discovered in him still greater treasures of human goodness. He had learnt the meaning of sacrifice, and had God spared him I know that that spirit of sacrifice would have marked his efforts to work out the salvation of our Jewish people. Alas! That was not to be. Whilst wounded and being carried to shelter the fatal fiend struck him. He has gone to join the ever-growing throng of those who offered themselves willingly for the honour of the land they loved and for the honour of our Jewish name. Only tears can tell how sadly we miss that dear friend. Blessed be his memory, who unto death was a guide and inspiration. To his sorrow-stricken parents may God grant His consolation!
