The death in action of Pte. Henry Cristol has removed from Anglo-Jewry a young and promising lad. Only fifteen months ago, he was transferred from the Middlesex Regt. to the Scottish Rifles, where we had the pleasure of meeting him. During the period he was with us he proved himself in his pleasant, quiet and unassuming manner, a sincere friend and a credit in every respect to the Jewish Community. When we endeavoured to gather together a minyan each Shabbas, young Henry was first and foremost and his presence was a source of pleasure to all of us. A short time ago he had the offer of his discharge but preferred to remain in the Army, and was transferred at a later date to the Royal Scots Fusiliers, proceeding with his unit abroad. He has now made the supreme sacrifice and to his grief-stricken parents we offer our deepest sympathy. May they find some comfort and consolation in the fact that Henry died at the post of duty, fighting for justice and liberty! - From J. S./M.M., Scottish Rifles.
