In 1916 Henry was conscripted into the Army to take part in the Great War, He enrolled in the 22nd King's Liverpool Regiment and did his training at Ripon in Yorkshire. In June 1917 Henry was a member of the 7th Battalion of the East Lancs. Regiment when he was killed in action on the 14th June 1917 at the Battle of Messines.
Family account was Henry was shot; and then was stretchered to the field hospital. While being stretchered he was then killed by a sniper's bullet.
