Henry was first issued with a Certificate of Alien Registration in 1914 when he was living in Middlesborough.

This was replaced by a new book following the Aliens Order of 1919. Registration stamps go from November 1920 to March 1961, showing he was classed as an 'alien' citizen for most of his life. The book contains information on change of addresses, fines imposed on Morris, both incurred in 1915 for 'failing to extinguish window light', and permits for the possession of Winchester rifles.

What was the impact of this:
As a Russian immigrant Henry was summoned for conscription in July 1918. With the assistance of Leon Locker and documents brought over from Russia, he was able to prove he was over 41 in September 1917 and his calling-up notice was cancelled.
