German Jews joining the army, 1914
German Jews had a special feeling about citizenship because when Berlin was made the capital, the Prussian Prince promised the Jews citizenship so they were incredibly patriotic. When he was 18, he volunteered straight from school to become a soldier and didn't tell his mother, which meant she was furious when she found out as he was so young.
Lasting effect, 1916
He was a solider in the Somme and had nightmares all his life about boots sticking out of the sand.

The Iron Cross
He was awarded the Iron Cross (First Class) and wore that constantly, hoping it would make a difference once the Nazis came into power.
Educated and Talented
He was well educated and spoke 7 languages; French, German, English, Hungarian, Czech, Greek and Russian. He also played chess and was an accomplished artist, taking his sketch book away with him every time he travelled. He was a dancer, played the piano and would delight listeners with his liedere.
