Dear Isaac and Ray
I am down at the back, the same place as where I was on July. I have left the hospital and am feeling in the pink. My throat is better now. I expect to be down here for some time; although I hear the battalion is out on its rest now down the line. I have not heard from you for over 3 weeks, I will either get your letters or they will be returned to you but you can write to me at once and let me know how you all are. Address letters: Pte. H Lazarus, 5922, C. Coy., 9 Royal Scots, 20 I.B.D., A.P.O, S17, B.E.F. France.

The weather out here is fearfully cold and we are under canvass which does not improve matters. This is a rotten country, it is very, very cold in the winter and exactly the opposite in the summer. I see they are talking about calling up C.3. men. Will this affect Isaac, I hope not. Write and let me know, also how you all are.
Have no more news, just now. Love and kisses to Gladys and also yourselves.

My Dear Isaac and Ray,
I must thank you for yours of a few days ago. Your wishes are appreciated greatly but don’t worry the war will soon be over, and By Jove I won’t be sorry. I hope you spent a pleasant couple of days at the New Year. I attended a service held on the 28th at 3 o’clock. The Chaplain, Rev.Freedman is attached to the Australians and I was the only Scottie there. It was held in a village a few miles away and I only hope I will get the Day of Atonement as well.
As regards your last paragraph, it must have got mislaid as I never received it. I expect it will turn up late. Much is very uncertain. Joe returned to the Company a few days ago, I was pleased to see him. I was very pleased to hear that Miss Gladys has started to walk, she will be quite a young lady by the time I come home. Have no more news at present. Wishing you well over the fast.

I hope you are all well as I haven’t heard from you for a few days. I am keeping in the pink and my teeth are A.1 now, they do not bother me. Things are going on just as usual only the weather is just a little too warm, but I expect it will be the same at home. Have no more time just now so kindly excuse this very brief note.
