Relationship with wife Florence according to grandson Peter

Family legend
“With my grandmother, it was like a love story,” says Peter.

“She never married again and she always lived with us.

“In the 1960s, which was the first time we went to the battlefields, she couldn’t bring herself to go.

“I was 22 when she died and there was a sadness about her all her life. She never talked about him. The only thing she said was that if he’d come back, they were going to live in America.”

He adds: “I’m incredibly proud of him.”
