George was the youngest of 12 children but only 7 of them survived. He was a twin, but his brother died within a month of their birth. George didn’t have a barmitzvah ceremony as his father died just before the ceremony and there was no-one and no money to arrange it.

George went to The Jewish Free School in Bell Lane, in London's East End. In 1916 when George joined the army, he was living at 24 Freeman Street, Spitalfields with his mother.

He enlisted in the 3/1 London Divisional Cyclist Company. The family was told that he had such bad bronchitis during the war that he always suffered with chest problems. We have a photo of him at Fovant Hospital (Wiltshire) and a photo of Trellis Cottage Hospital at Tisbury. He didn’t talk of being gassed but that was often the reason for chest problems. He was discharged from the army in 1919 and there is a photo of him and his future wife, with him still in uniform.

He met his future wife Hannah at a music hall. The story was that he and his friend Jack King (later the publican at Approach Tavern, Approach Road, Bethnal Green) went to the music hall and saw two girls who caught their eye. They followed them to the bus stop ...and later married them. The girls were Hannah Blom and her sister, Blanche.

The family were involved in Sandys Row Synagogue and Hannah and George married there on 1st August 1920. George stayed close to his mother, Rivka or Reeka, who took over her husband’s business of letting out stalls in the Tenter Ground in the East End.

After the war, George worked on a jewellery stall in the Whitechapel Road. Later, he apprenticed himself to a diamond cutter to learn the trade in Black Lion Yard, off the Whitechapel Road.

George and his wife Hannah, set up home first in Bethnal Green, and then in Hackney before moving out into the country to Northwood Hills. There they kept the original kitchen, downstairs toilet and bathroom with a pink suite, and they thought that this was the height of fashion.

The family story is that George was one of the founders of Pinner Synagogue in Cecil Park.

In older age, George became diabetic and watched his diet, except in the last year of his life when apparently he broke his diet eating sweets in the department store, Sopers in Harrow. He eventually died in January 1970 of pneumonia but mostly of kidney failure brought on from diabetes or “sugar” as he called it.
