Family

Flora's family came to Britain in the 1880s from Eastern Europe, and her mother Golda Kosky attended the Jews' Free School in London, later marrying Meyer Abramowitz in the East End and settling in West Ham.

First World War bombing raids

Flora remembered what the family would do whenever there was a German raid on London, and you can read her recollections in the gallery to the right, including her description of a Zeppelin being shot down:

"One night my father took me up in his arms from The Dug Out and together with all the rest of the occupants, we stood in the garden to The Zeppelin. In a complete cone of brilliant searchlights, this huge glittering silver cigar shaped object moved slowly against the night sky like a fish in a black sea. Tiny objects dangled just below it and in a moment a flame shot up from its middle, flaming balls dropped from underneath - these were the men on fire - it then split in two at the middle and a great sheet of flame dropped down, still floating East."

Flora also describes her feelings of guilt as she used to enjoy her trips into the shelter in the family's back garden, and when one day whilst they were in there a bomb landed on a nearby school and a child was sadly killed: "I suffered enormous remorse for this death which I thought I had caused and for a very ling time I prayed for forgiveness."
