Major Evelyn de Rothschild

Major Evelyn A de Rothschild, Royal Bucks Hussars, died of wounds on November 17th. Born in January 1886, he was the second son of the late Mr Leopold de Rothschild and of Mrs de Rothschild. Major de Rothschild was educated at Trinity College Cambridge, graduating in 1907, and since leaving the University he has been associated with the firm of Messrs. N. M. Rothschild and Sons.On the death of his father, Mr Leopold de Rothschild, he inherited in equal shares with his brother Captain Athony de Rothschild, the famous South Court stud and Palace House stables, together with horses in training, yearlings and foals. As both brothers were on active service, some of the horses in training were disposed of privately. Major de Rothschild in 1911 became the treasurer of the United Synagogue and on the death of Mr Albert H. Jessel he became a Vice-President of that institution.

THE FUNERAL
A Reuter telegram from Cairo, dated Monday states: -
An impressive military funeral was given today to Major Evelyn de Rothschild who died on Saturday from wounds received in Palestine. Lord Dalmeny attended. An Exchange Telegraph Company's message from Cairo states that at the funeral the procession, more than a quarter of a mile long, included all the local Jewish Societies. Despite the rain, thousands of people assembled to witness the funeral. At the Old Synagogue, a service was held and the deceased was subsequently interred in the cemetery of that synagogue.

Letter from Officer

"The Regiment was taking part in a mounted charge on the Turkish infantry, who were very strongly posted on some high ground, El Mughair. I attacked with the Regiment in column of squadrons, and Evelyn was with the 2nd Squadron and was to take command of the two leading Squadrons on reaching the objective. We had some two miles of open country to cross, which was fairly swept by machine-gun and rifle fire. It was about half-way across this plain that Evelyn was struck down by a bullet. After all his death was a glorious one, killed when charging at the head of his men of Bucks.”

Letter to family from CO

"And then Evelyn has gone - a friend of fifteen years. Evelyn was a 'very perfect gentle knight; and as Second-in-Command of the Regiment almost ' more royalist than the king.’”
