Childhood in an Artist's Family - Unpublished Memoirs from sister, Ethel Knoblich

Family legend
My brother Eric was born to Edith and Lehmann in 1892, and was to inherit the artistic natures of his parents together with much charm, and a talent for languages and music, but with a dislike of games and all sport.

War and Consequence - Unpublished Memoirs from sister, Ethel Knoblich

Family legend
In 1914 we were on a climbing/sketching holiday on the Isle of Arran (off the coast of Scotland) when the war started. We were in the unenviable position of possessing the German name of Oppenheimer and without our passports, we had difficulty in leaving the island. When we returned home, we found that the mosaic factory had been stoned and windows smashed, as the headboard read "Oppenheimer Mosaics."

Eric decided to join up as he felt this was the only course open to him, and was accepted as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was sent to a training camp in Yorkshire with his men. He hated violence and discipline, and the sight of blood make him sick. Patriotism was a term which did not fill him with awe, and the war was a nightmare to him. Two years later, as a captain at Paschendale, he lost half his men who stumbled in fatigue off the duckboards and were drowned in the mud.
