Emma's father died before she was 14 and she lived with her siblings and her mother, who was living by 'Independent' means, still in Greenwich, London according to the 1871 census. By 1881 the family had moved to Paddington, London.

What was the impact of this:
The second wife of Rev. Berman Berliner, Emma married him in 1894 while he was the Reader (Minister) of the St John's Wood (United) Synagogue. Sadly Berman Berliner died in 1913, so that by the beginning of the war Emma was free to devote herself firstly to the Belgian Refugees at the Manchester Hotel, (12 Dec 1914 - 11 March 1915) and then to Beech House Auxiliary Hospital (12 March 1915 - 30 September 1915).
