After The Great Crash in 1929, Ellis went on to become the only Jewish farmer in Manchester along with his brother Michael, and, in the early 1930s, supplied kosher milk and yoghurt to the community.
Ellis spoke French fluently, and part of his war service was spent in France where this was especially useful.
