Mrs Joseph Herberts, 26 William Henry Street Blackburn, is officially informed that her husband, Sergt. Joseph Herberts, of the Machine Gun Corps, has been killed in action in Mesopotamia. Joining the East Lancs in September 1914, he was transferred to the machine Gun Corps and took part in the capture of Kut and Bagdad. Sergt. Herberts, who rendered much valuable assistance in the British Forces as a Scout during the Boer War, is the third Jewish soldier from Blackburn to have fallen. An upholsterer by trade, he was well respected by Jews and Christians alike. He leaves a widow and three children. It may be added that 99 per cent of the Jewish boys in Blackburn who were born in this country are in khaki, a record for any town in the United Kingdom.
