By the death of Sec-Lieut Edward Gordon Abelson, Royal Marine Light Infantry, Anglo-Jewry is the poorer for the loss of a gallant young Jewish officer for whom a brilliant career might have bee anticipated had he lived to fulfill the promise of his school days. "Teddy" as he was to all his many friends, was a boy of a singularly lovable disposition, a genuine humourist, modest and merry and fond of sport, simple and unaffected. Those who did no penetrate beyond the surface with him did not know the high intellect, the ready perception and the power of concentration which in him were allied with a sense of duty. Had he lived to enter the university and study further, a notable career would surely have been his. Instead, he has achieved still more and made the supreme sacrifice, leaving behind a great blank in the hearts of those who loved him.
The parents of the deceased have received a letter from his captain in which he says: "I feel I cannot allow a moment to pass by without telling you how genuinely sorry I personally feel over the loss this company has sustained. Your son was most efficient, in fact the ideal machine gun officer, and always had his sub-section in a high state of efficiency. HE was much liked by his brother officers, respected by his men, extraordinary reliable and had special abilities which fitted him for his work. On my dispatch to the Brigadier after the action and in reporting your son as being wounded, I described him as 'a most capable and efficient officer.' I suppose and hope he has furnished you with all details concerning the action and what a noble and gallant pat he played in it.
