Edgar was educated at Clifton College, Bristol, and then at Oxford, which he left in order to enlist in 1914. At just 18, he obtained a commission as a young captain in the 13th Battalion of the King’s Liverpool Regiment.

Although he wrote to his family of his homesickness at Rosh Hashanah, he was constantly thinking of his men when he was home on leave, and would spend his own money on items such as footballs to maintain morale. When his parents sent him warm clothes, he asked them to provide items for his men as well.

In late 1916, Edgar was spending the majority of his service in half-flooded trenches but, by the spring of 1917, his letters home included tales of horse-riding and enjoying his rank. His regiment carried out a major assault on German lines east and south-east of the village of Monchy-le-Preux (about 6 miles east of Arras) on 2-4 May 1917. Although Edgar survived the assault, he was wounded on 10 May and withdrew, presumably with his troops, to Agnez-les-Duisans, about 6 miles west of Arras. He died there on 14 May and is buried at the Duisans British Cemetery in nearby Etrun. He was 20 years old.
