Capt Daniel Piza, East Yorks regiment, killed April 9 on his 44th birthday, was the youngest son of the late Jacob Piza. Privately educated, he went abroad at an early age & took part in the South African war, making his way from the Cape to South America to join Brabants Horse. After another long absence from England, spent in the heart of Africa, Central America, the West Indies & Mexico, he once more returned to offer his services to his country in the present war. He was gazetted to 2nd lieutenancy early in 1916 & went to the front at the beginning of last July.

He was soon placed in charge of a trench mortar battery & in that capacity had a very active & continuous share in the fighting. In the autumn of 1916 he was promoted to Captain. His courage & devotion to his work won him the full confidence of his superior officers & this was marked some months ago by his further promotion to trench mortar officer in command of all the trench mortars in his sector.
