Music
Very musical household, brother Joe had a small amateur band, and sister Florrie played the piano, she never had any lessons but taught herself to play by ear. The family was always singing and playing musical instruments.
About Charley
Charley was taken ill with Diphtheria at the age of 7, this damaged the nerves in his middle ear and consequently he was profoundly deaf for the rest of his life. He could hear some noise but not be able to differentiate what the sound was, he could lip read perfectly, additionally he had a great sense of rhythm which was helped through his musical family. When he was demobbed he ran a dancing school in Johannesburg for 2 years before coming back to London.
