Ben was very popular amongst his comrades. He was a school teacher and so was given the nickname "the encyclopaedia".

Letter reporting Ben's death

His parents received a letter, written in pencil, following his death, presumably from either his commanding officer or a comrade. It described how Ben had first been wounded and was sent to for first aid to a dressing station. There he was ordered to a hospital, behind the lines. He refused to go. He returned to the trenches, only to be killed (probably in a barrage).
