Jewish Chronicle Obituary, 15 September 1918

The death has occurred in action of Rifleman Benny J. Woolf, K.R.R.C., aged nineteen, the eighth son of Mr and Mrs. I H Woolf, for whom the deepest sympathy is felt in Hackney, where they have been residents and well known for many years. Young Woolf joined the army voluntarily more than two years ago and had been in France eleven months, nearly the whole of the time in the firing line. He was a particularly bright and cheerful lad.

The following letter has been received by the parents from Major W. E. Johns: “It is with great regret that I have to inform you that your son, No. A204203 Rifleman Woolf was killed in action on the 23rd August. The Battalion was engaged in one of the big battles recently fought, and gallantly achieved all that was asked of it. Your son fought nobly and died a brave man’s death. His loss is deeply mourned in the battalion by all the officers and his comrades. With expressions of our deepest sympathy in your bereavement, I remain, yours sincerely W. E. Johns, Major, Commanding 13th Battn, K.R.R.C.”

Mr and Mrs Woolf have five other sons doing their duty in the country’s cause in the army and seven members of the family have made the supreme sacrifice. Much sympathy has been evoked by the death of the youngest soldier in the family – he was a mere boy – yet the grief stricken parents will surely take courage and find much solace and comfort in the knowledge that not in vain did their beloved one give his previous life. He died that England may live and his blood, mingling with that of his comrades, will be the seed from which shall blossom forth the goodly plant of glorious victory of England’s noble cause, and the realisation of her ideals and aspirations of justice and righteousness.
