Whilst it would appear that Benjamin enlisted and trained with the 1/2nd London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), we believe that he never served in action with this Battalion but was killed in action fighting with the 20th (Service) 3rd (Public Schools) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.

The 20th (Service) Battalion ( 3rd Public Schools) had been raised in September 1914 arriving in France during November 1915. They saw action at Bazentins and High Wood on the 10th July during the Battle of Albert (part of the Battle of the Somme), suffering 375 casualties.

On the 24th August during the Battle of Delville Wood straightening the line north of Delville Wood

The War Diary for the 24th August states that two platoons were sent to take over part of the taken by the 1st Queens. They took over a bombing post at the corner of Wood Lane and New German Trench.

Casualties for their time in the line were 25 killed and 139 wounded. It would appear that Benjamin was amongst those killed that day.
