What was the impact of this:
Developed a fondness for riding motorcycles following his initial Army service as a Motor Transport Driver in the Army Service Corps, in which he was enlisted as a private soldier. He left the army as a junior officer and his batman, 'Joe', as we remember him, turned up at his door some years later, without a job but with a wife and children to feed; Ben gave Joe a job as his driver and for many years Joe drove Ben from north London to work in Bermondsey and back.
