Riding horses
On joining up, and remember he was a young man who had grown up in London’s East End, he was told here is a horse, you can ride a horse and so that is what he did. The Royal Field Artillery were a regiment, who were not in the trenches but were in the lines behind the trenches. The horses pulled the gun carriages so the soldiers were on horseback pulling guns.
School friend, Ruby Weintrop
Barney joined up with his school friend Ruby Weintrop later known as Bud Flanagan. The story attached to this is well known. Their Sergeant Major was an unpopular man and on one occasion Ruby Weintrop, as he then was, said to him words to the effect that "when I get out of the army I will make a laughing stock out of you" which he did by using his name as his stage name.
Getting a photo with Mark, who was serving in the US Navy.
His two brothers both served in the US forces during the First World War. Mark was an ordinary seaman in the US Navy and Mickey was a Sergeant in the US Army. The story of the photo is that Mark Kaufman, now in the American Navy, came to London. It is thought that he was assigned to a US Navy troop-transport ship that crossed the Atlantic back and forth and knocked on Barney's door and woke him up in the middle of the night. The next day, it is believed, they went to a studio and had the portrait taken.
