The Fallen

Waley - Lieut. Aubrey John Simon Waley made the supreme sacrifice on July 31st, leading his platoon into action. He was the elder son of Major J. D. Waley and Mrs. Edgar Mocatta and was educated at Malvern. At the outbreak of the war, he was keen to get to the front at the earliest possibly moment and thought he could achieve this quickly by enlisting in the ranks. He was, however, persuaded to apply for a commission and after a few weeks in the Inns of Court O.T.C. he was gazetted to the Royal Fusiliers in September 1914. His first experience of the firing line was at Loos in September 1915, where he was slightly wounded. As a result of these wounds, he was ill for over a year, having two attacks of tetanus, the sufferings of which he bore with conspicuous fortitude. He rejoined his original battalion when he went out to France again last month, adn met his death within forty-eight hours of his return to the trenches.
