Letter in the Jewish Chronicle, 12 November 1915
News has just reached Mr. Reuben Jacobs that his son Pte. Arthur Jacobs, 2/7 Batt London Regt., has been killed at the front. We now publish a letter addressed to the parents before the lad’s departure for the fighting line. He wrote: “Just a few lines telling you I am going abroad on Sunday, 15th inst. Dear Mother, do not worry about me because if I know that you are doing so you will put bad heart into me, so don’t fret as I will be alright. Bear in mind there are thousands of others besides me. What I am doing is that I am protecting you and our family and home. I have no the slightest idea where we are going. It might be India, the Dardanelles or Malta. If anything happens to me it will be a deed of honour to our religion. If I come home safe and sound, you will be proud of me and we will be happy for ever.”
