Words of remembrance from a friend, 1917
A friend and fellow officer said of him in a letter after his death "He had already proved himself to be a most capable and brave officer, and his death us a very great loss to me. Had he lived there is no doubt that his promotion would have been rapid. I feel his death very keenly, he had such a splendid character." Killed in Action, 1917
lfred served with his unit in Ypres in Belgium, while returning from a briefing he was killed instantly when a shell exploded near to him. He died just two days after receiving news that his second son had been born and was reportedly in very high spirits.
His Son's Sacrifice, 1944
Before he died Alfred had two sons, one son, Bertram, served like his father in the Second World War, he too was killed while fighting and is remebered on a memorial bench along with his father in a park near to where he had lived.
