Family legend
Albert was recorded as a minor (15) in order to get him safely off the immigration boat as he was "in need of family protection," due to looking so small and frail.
It was successful at the time but prevented him from receiving his pension until he was 70 and it also meant that he was conscripted in the Second World War, despite being 42.
Travelling to London, 1920
He left Poland because he did not want to be conscripted into the Russian Army. He left home at 16 and initially planned to go to the USA but got stuck in Berlin until the end of the war. He travelled to Vienna, went to France and then to Canada but refused to be a farm labourer so was sent back to Europe.
The ship ended up stopping in Liverpool and two of his brothers had him smuggled to London.
