Letter in the JC to Adolph's mother, 14 February 1917
2nd Lieut. James Pringle writes from France to the mother of Pte A. Lewis, Northumberland Fusiliers: - "His death was purely an accident due to his being knocked down by a passing motor lorry. It happened at night, and just now the nights are exceedingly dark so that he could not have seen the motor and thus met his death. I know it is a heavy blow to you and the officers and men of his company join me in the message of sympathy to you in your sad bereavement. I knew him quite well, and I found him a good soldier in every way. He was one of our best men and was much thought of by his fellow privates. He was in fact a true British, and has now given his most valued possession for his King and Country - his life."
