When he first joined the armed forces Jacob was assigned to a cavalry regiment, having never been on a horse before in his life he fell off on his first day and was tranferred to the Royal Military police instead. After this he served in the Somme, fighting in the thick of the action seeing many of the men in his regiment fall around him.
